ARTIST STATEMENT : POETRY OF THE LAND

This work depicts the Alpine Region of the Great Divide of Victoria and Southern NSW. My intention is to capture the essence of the subject recognizing patterns and relationships of form, tone, colour and light. I see the intelligence functioning within nature as being in perfect accord, where nothing is independent and where there is an intrinsic rightness of all component parts. Thus I am seeking to translate the rightness of nature to the rightness of a work through insight and sensibility. I have approached this work using a close tonal range of greyed hues or the use of strong saturated colour.

The way in which I use space in my work has been an ongoing inquiry. Some of the earlier works for this exhibition show a concern for the quality of airiness in the landscape, the ability to move through the painting. Increasingly I am bringing the subject closer to the picture plane, to a point nearer abstraction in the latest works.

In my paintings I aim to speak of the beauty and strength of this place in a way that is a satisfying and poetic visual experience.
